Moving from Google Maps

A map on a page, a marker, geocoding, static maps and elevation, moved to Maps by DeltaBreen: open MapLibre maps on OpenStreetMap data, flat monthly plans, and never an overage bill. The free plan needs no card.

Move over in ten minutes

The same map, pin, search and picture, before and after. Create a publishable key for your site first.

1. The map

Google Maps JavaScript API
<script src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?key=AIza…&callback=initMap" async></script>

function initMap() {
  const map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map'), {
    center: { lat: 53.35, lng: -6.26 },
    zoom: 12,
  })
}
Maps by DeltaBreen
import { createMap } from '@deltabreen/maps'
import 'maplibre-gl/dist/maplibre-gl.css'

const map = await createMap({
  container: 'map',
  key: 'pk_…',
  style: 'meadow',
  center: [-6.26, 53.35],
  zoom: 12,
})

Coordinates are [longitude, latitude], the other way round from { lat, lng }. No build step? One tag does it: a <div data-maps-key="pk_…" data-maps-style="meadow"> and the embed script, as the docs show.

2. A marker

Google Maps JavaScript API
new google.maps.Marker({
  position: { lat: 53.35, lng: -6.26 },
  map,
  title: 'Our shop',
})
Maps by DeltaBreen
import maplibregl from 'maplibre-gl'

new maplibregl.Marker()
  .setLngLat([-6.26, 53.35])
  .setPopup(new maplibregl.Popup().setText('Our shop'))
  .addTo(map)

3. Geocoding

Google Maps JavaScript API
new google.maps.Geocoder().geocode(
  { address: '77 Pearse Street, Dublin' },
  (results) => { /* results[0].geometry.location */ },
)
Maps by DeltaBreen
import { geocode } from '@deltabreen/maps'

const { features } = await geocode({ key: 'pk_…' }, { q: '77 Pearse Street, Dublin' })
// features[0].geometry.coordinates is [lng, lat]

Addresses, places and businesses in one call, with free autocomplete. Up to 1,000 at once from a server: POST /api/v1/search/batch.

4. Static maps and elevation

Google Maps JavaScript API
https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap
  ?center=53.35,-6.26&zoom=12&size=x400&key=AIza…

https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/elevation/json
  ?locations=53.35,-6.26|51.9993,-9.7428&key=AIza…
Maps by DeltaBreen
https://tiles.deltabreen.eu/static/-6.26,53.35,12/x400.png
  ?style=meadow&key=pk_…

https://maps.deltabreen.eu/api/v1/elevation
  ?points=-6.26,53.35|-9.7428,51.9993&key=pk_…

Elevation takes longitude first too, and a whole route profile in one call (path=…&samples=…).

The full reference is in the docs; React and Next.js have a <Map> component, and any MapLibre app can use a map link.

Questions

Is there a simpler way to put a map on my site?
Maps by DeltaBreen covers the common needs, a map on a page, static map images, search and elevation, on flat monthly plans. Free has 20,000 loads a month and needs no card; paid plans start at €5. Go over and we email you; we never send an overage bill.
Can I show a map without entering a card?
Yes. Sign up, create a publishable key scoped to your domain, and drop in one embed script or use the MapLibre SDK. The free plan takes no card and has no per-load billing to configure.
Does it do geocoding and static map images?
Yes. Search finds addresses, places and businesses in one call, with free type-ahead and nearest-first results for things like "coffee" or "pharmacy", plus reverse geocoding to the nearest address. A static map image API returns a PNG of any place from a URL, for emails, chat bots and previews. Both run on their own allowance with the same rollover and pause.
What map data and styles does it use?
OpenStreetMap data served as vector tiles, with open MapLibre styles you design and own. Export your style any day.
Is it really free to start?
Yes: 20,000 map loads a month, free, no card, business sites included. A map left open is still one load, for up to 24 hours.
